San Antonio mayoral hopeful Beto Altamirano has a new job: running tech-industry advocacy group Tech Bloc.
An entrepreneur who came in third in May’s crowded mayoral race, Altamirano will now serve as CEO of San Antonio-based Tech Bloc, officials with the organization said Tuesday.
In an emailed statement, Altamirano promised to focus on job creation and preparing the local workforce for the future — two key issues he focused on during his mayoral run.
“Tech Bloc envisions San Antonio as a national leader in the 21st-century economy, driving job growth, innovation and opportunity through strategic investment in people, place and industries of the future,” Altamirano said. “Technology jobs are the new collar work — they don’t always require a four-year degree, but they do require training, pathways and access.”
Altamirano pulled a little more than 12% of the vote in the crowded mayoral contest. Despite never having served on City Council, he also amassed a significant war chest and endorsements from leaders including former Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff.
Despite Altamirano’s lack of council experience, he’s no stranger to City Hall. The businessman’s Irys Technologies developed the mobile app for the city’s 311 system, and he also served as vice chair of the Port Authority of San Antonio.
In his statement about the new leadership role, Altamirano pledged to bridge the city’s digital divide, promote AI literacy and work with the city, county and outside organizations to create favorable conditions for companies in cybersecurity, bioscience, advanced manufacturing and AI.
